W. Gaines Cumbie, D.O.

Dr. W. Gaines Cumbie is a fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon who specializes in Hip & Knee Joint Preservation and Replacement surgery. Including complex primary hip and knee replacement and revision surgery.

Dr. Cumbie obtained his medical degree from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. He then went on to complete orthopedic surgery residency at the world-renowned Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio. After completing residency, Dr. Cumbie chose to pursue advanced training in complex primary and revision hip and knee replacement surgery with a fellowship at Total Joint Specialist. During his fellowship training, Dr. Cumbie mastered cutting edge techniques in minimally invasive muscle sparing direct anterior hip replacement, rapid recovery knee replacement, robotic-assisted hip and knee replacement, and complex primary and revision hip and knee joint replacement.

With a focus on patient-centric care, Dr. Cumbie puts an emphasis on using an individualized approach for helping patients achieve their goals to restore and prolong the function of their knee or hip through both operative and nonoperative joint preservation strategies. He focuses on surgical techniques that are muscle sparing and minimally invasive, along with wound closure techniques that lead to reduced scar formation and incisions that are more aesthetically pleasing.

Dr. Cumbie uses a refined minimally invasive, muscle sparing direct anterior approach for his primary total hip replacements and allows his patients to immediately resume their daily activities after surgery without any weightbearing restrictions or limiting hip precautions.

Dr. Cumbie is also proficient in rapid recovery total knee replacements, partial knee replacements, and robotic-assisted surgery. In Dr. Cumbie’s approach to knee replacement, implants are positioned to reconstruct the patient’s original, pre-arthritic joint line. This method reduces the need for extensive soft tissue and ligament releases commonly required in traditional knee replacement. The goal is to preserve knee movement that closely emulates the natural biomechanics of a healthy joint.

With the patient in mind, Dr. Cumbie has refined the latest surgical techniques and rapid recovery protocols to reduce post-operative pain after hip and knee replacement. Patients who have hip or knee replacement by Dr. Cumbie are able to walk immediately after their procedure and typically go home the same day within hours of their surgery.

Dr. Cumbie is a third-generation physician. Like his father and grandfather before him, he takes pride in building a strong, trusting relationship with the patients and communities he serves. He is originally from Montgomery, AL where is father practiced oncology and internal medicine. His grandfather was a family medicine physician in Andalusia, AL. Dr. Cumbie along with his wife and three young children reside in Peachtree City, GA and in his spare time, he enjoys spending time with his family, golf, fishing, biking, hiking, pickleball, and travel.

Dr. Cumbie provides care to patients through his current Georgia office locations in Fayetteville, Newnan, Lagrange, and Stockbridge. He also welcomes patients from across the country for consultations and second opinions.
